We created Memorial 2025 to recognise and honour all those lost to armed conflict last year, and the families who mourn them. The stories in this project are taken from more than 20 countries across the globe. They offer a unique insight into the reality of armed conflict today, at its most personal level.
Twenty-nine member organisations from our Casualty Recorders Network contributed to this project with individual case histories from their databases. Their meticulous research includes, in many cases, direct interviews with survivors and family members of those who died. We believe that these families’ stories hold a deeper and more meaningful truth about the impact of armed conflict than statistics and headlines can ever convey.

Memorial 2025 also aims to challenge the way that the human cost of war is portrayed in the media and public discourse. We want to move the narrative away from anonymous statistics and political positioning, to focus on the direct human impact of armed conflict.

Learn about casualty recording
The reality of armed conflict in 2024:
- There were 61 active conflicts across 36 countries – the highest number since the end of the second world war.
- At least one civilian was killed every 12 minutes.
- Civilian deaths rose by 40% compared to 2023. This is the third consecutive yearly increase.
- The number of women and children killed quadrupled compared to the previous two-year period (2021–2022).
- When explosive weapons were used in towns or cities, 95% of those killed or injured were civilians.
- The average annual global death toll this decade is more than double the previous twenty-year average.
