PEARL (People for Equality and Relief in Lanka) brings together research, advocacy and activism to promote and protect the human rights of Tamil people in the North-East of Sri Lanka. They work to obtain justice and accountability for the mass atrocity crimes committed by the Sri Lankan State against the Tamil people during the armed conflict, which came to an end in 2009.
PEARL is keen to advance the importance of casualty recording through the historic context of Sri Lanka to ensure that casualty recording becomes a standard practice in conflict situations. They believe that there is a lot to be learnt from the Sri Lanka example, both of the impact of casualty recording, but also of the lack of casualty recording and the trauma that continues within affected communities.
