Estimated fatalities in 1975 – 1990 civil war

Previously part of the Ottoman Empire, Lebanon came under French rule in 1920 before gaining independence in 1944. The population was approximately half Christian and half Muslim at this time, although following the creation of Israel a large influx of Palestinian refugees into Lebanon shifted the demographic balance. In the late 1960s, Palestinian armed groups began using Lebanon as a base.

In 1958, a short-lived civil war resulted in the death of approximately 4,000 people, and the deployment of US military forces to Lebanon.

In 1975, a sectarian civil war broke out which lasted until 1990, with an estimated death toll of approximately 100,000. Thousands more people disappeared in the conflict. Syrian troops joined the conflict in 1976; Israeli forces invaded in 1978 and again in 1982. Following the end of the civil war, all militias across Lebanon were officially dissolved, apart from Hezbollah.

In 2006, Israel attacked southern Lebanon after eight Israeli soldiers were killed and two kidnapped by Hezbollah. During the month-long war that followed at least 1,191 people were killed, the majority of which were civilians. Following the Hamas attack on Israel in October 2023, Israel attacked Hezbollah in Lebanon again in late 2024. At least 3,961 people were killed in this conflict, mostly civilians.

What we’re doing

Every Casualty Counts works with members of the Casualty Recorders Network to support efforts to document every person killed in armed conflict and violence in Lebanon. We work with casualty recorders to ensure all victims of the conflict are recognised, and that the toll of ongoing violence is fully understood by policy makers, media and the public.

Let it be remembered, not repeated.
